  • PRINTED ON GENUINE ANTIQUE REAL VINTAGE "THE UNIVERSAL DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE" PAGE FROM 1930
  • FROM LIMITED EDITION OF 150

Despair is a limited edition artwork by Jakub DK (Jakub Krzewniak), created as an artistic response to the unrest and violent public disorder that spread across parts of the UK in the summer of 2024.

This is not intended as neutral decoration. The work comes from the artist’s own response to a moment of anger, tension, division and despair. Rather than explaining the image or prescribing a single interpretation, Jakub DK leaves the visual language of the piece open to the viewer.

The contemporary image is printed directly onto an authentic page from The Universal Dictionary of the English Language dating from the 1930s. The aged typography, natural discolouration and individual marks of the original paper place a contemporary social subject over a physical fragment of the past.

Because every vintage dictionary page is different, each print has its own arrangement of words, ageing and imperfections. These variations are part of the character of the artwork rather than defects.
